Protecting the Visayan Warty Pig from the African Swine Fever virus

The emergency
Talarak Foundation manages a conservation breeding programme for Wisayan Warty Pig, as well as a small private reserve that has approximately 60 individuals of the species. Warty pigs in one of Talarak’s captive centres have already been affected by the deadly African Swine Fever; 16 animals were infected with the virus and all died within two weeks. Emergency protocols needed to be established and more biosecure facilities constructed, to minimise the impacts of the disease.
Results
A bio-secure area for a captive population of the Wisayan Warty Pig was created within the Negros Forest Park Conservation Centre.
Bio-security protocols were also strengthened.
Surveys using camera-traps and community outreach on the islands of Negros and Panay did not reveal any affected wild populations, but given the severity of the disease, ongoing surveillance will be important.
