Strengthening mitigation measures to protect the Sulawesi Crested Black Macaques in a time of crisis
The emergency
The Covid-19 endemic was impacting the conservation activities for macaque. Decreases in other forms of income, caused by covid-19, was causing local communities to expand their fields, thereby increasing the potential for conflict with the macaque. There was a noticeable increase in trapping for the macaque in 2019.
Results
Regular forest patrols and community outreach was used to help decrease theats to the macaques, whilst also maintaining community outreach and engagement. 24 patrol trails in six different areas were patrolled at least three times each by two teams of six people in the
Tangkoko reserve. Community-led outreach and social events were organised in five villages surrounding the Tangkoko reserve to empower villagers about human-wildlife coexistence, monitor the patrol teams' impact in terms of nature protection and foster local pride in the area's wildlife.
