Surveys for Delacour’s Langurs in an unprotected area of limestone forest
The emergency
An area adjacent to Van Long Nature Reserve, which harbours the only viable population of Delacour’s langur, is unprotected. Surveys were needed to help establish the status of the area's langur population and threats. These surveys are required as part of the process for having the area formally protected.
Results
Surveys identified five groups of the primate, with approximately 33 individuals. The area's langurs are part of the population in Van Long Nature Reserve and their protection will be vital to the persistence of the species. As part of the process for establishing a protected area, an agreement was signed between the relevant local government departments to protect and monitor the population of langurs.
